Printmaking courses at Artichoke will be run in April.

Otherwise, we offer one to one tuition during the rest of the year in all of the printmaking techniques listed.

1 day course £95.00 including consumable materials
2 day course £175.00 including consumable materials
One to one tuition is £150.00 per day including consumable materials

The cost of plates and paper used are specific to your one to one needs and is a separate cost depending on your choice of technique and image size.

Please book one to one tuition a minimum of 1 week in advance of the date you wish to do the one to one tuition on.

If you have a particular personal project in mind, one to one tuition is a great way to make it happen!

MONOPRINTING
This ever-popular course involves making unique images from a variety of demonstrated techniques. We will use the versatile material ‘true grain’ and a combination of oil-based colours, water-soluble drawing implements, collage applications and an introduction to colour theory when using and mixing printing inks.

INTRODUCTION to Etching with Colour
Two popular courses which present traditional etching techniques. Hard and soft ground, aquatint, and sugar lift are demonstrated. The medium is developed using traditional implements combined with practical tuition about plate making and printing. Using colour etching inks and hand colouring the plates are demonstrated.

Etching & AQUATINT: The Full Story
1.Every serious printmaker should master the process of aquatint.
2.The principle of aquatint is simple.
Two sentences which cause even the most fearless printmaker to quake. This excellent course is a must for all intaglio-loving artists.

RELIEF PRINTING
With this course the popular medium of relief printing is succinctly introduced as an excellent format for making colour prints. The course demonstrates the use of various cutting tools and the explanation of both reduction printing and images which are made by cutting a separate block for each colour and aligning the progressive impressions by means of register marks is inspiring. The subtle differences between the woodcut and linocut are made clear.

COLLAGRAPH
An immediate, flexible and fun introduction to the collagraph print. Using a variety of
textures, adhesives, carborundum and collage additions to create various surfaces. Printing using colour with the image will be demonstrated. Suitable for all artists of various skills levels.     

Creative Drypoint
This course reveals the art of drypointand how to make creative and dramatic effects using a wide range of traditional implements, roulettes and needles together with modern power tools. A slide talk that includes images of contemporary and archival references from the British Museum Print rooms is enlightenment. Yes, it really is  that good!

SPECIALIST COURSES [additional materials fee]

PHOTOPOLYMER ETCHING
This course presents an excellent starting point for utilizing sketches and photographic images with a technique that combines both ‘safe etch’ plate preparation and traditional acid biting methods.
Please bring 2 copies of the same image photocopied onto acetate for use on this course.

STONE LITHOGRAPHY
The art of stone lithography. This planographic medium is explained in entirety. The purpose, effect and evolution of the image are demonstrated as an exceedingly vibrant medium. The technical process is attractively presented and the use of pencils, crayons, tusche and colour allow versatile images to be created on this two-day course.

PLATE LITHOGRAPHY
This excellent course demonstrates using the lightweight, easily stored zinc lithographic plate. The essential characteristics of drawing and processing the plate are explained and a two-colour work is planned and designed for the final printing stages.

Solar Plate Intaglio
This course utilizes intaglio techniques combined with a unique matrix called - flexo plates. The plate making is a fascinating process and the images resulting are intensely detailed. A must for anyone who loves mark-making and drawing.
